Are Registered Dietitians and Nutritionists the same?

The answer is, it depends! While the terms "Registered Dietitian" and "Nutritionist" are sometimes used interchangeably, they are not always the same. The title "Dietitian" is legally protected in Canada, meaning that only individuals who meet specific qualifications and standards can use it. In some provinces, such as Alberta, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island, the title "Nutritionist" is also protected, so in these regions, the two titles are equivalent. However, in other provinces like British Columbia, the title "Nutritionist" is not protected, so it can be used by anyone, regardless of their level of training or expertise.

It's important to note that titles like "Registered Holistic Nutritionist" or "Certified Nutritional Practitioner" are not the same as "Dietitian." These titles are often used by individuals who have completed privately-owned training programs, and the length and quality of their education may vary greatly. Therefore, it's crucial to be informed and discerning when seeking nutritional advice, and to prioritize consulting with qualified healthcare professionals like Registered Dietitians.

To find out if your nutrition provider is registered, go to the College of Dietitians of British Columbia's website to confirm (I am registrant #1299).

Are your services covered by extended health plans?

It's possible that your extended health care plan may provide coverage for some or all of the cost of services provided by a Registered Dietitian. However, it's important to verify the details of your plan with your insurance provider before your appointment to ensure that you understand your coverage.

If your plan does not provide coverage for Registered Dietitian services, you may still be able to claim a non-refundable tax credit for the expense. In British Columbia, Registered Dietitians are classified as "Authorized Medical Practitioners," which means that their services may be eligible for tax credits under certain conditions. Be sure to save your receipts and consult with a tax professional to determine your eligibility.

Can you accept clients outside of BC?

No. I am licensed to practice dietetics in the province of British Columbia, only. If you require a Dietitian in another province, please visit the Dietitians of Canada website to find a provider in your area.
